How tame is our God?

How tame is our God? Consider this quote from AW Tozer:

The God of the modern evangelical rarely astonishes anybody. He manages to stay pretty much within the constitution. Never breaks our bylaws. He’s a very well-behaved God and very denominational and very much one of us, and we ask Him to help us when we’re in trouble and look to Him to watch over us when we’re asleep. The God of the modern evangelical isn’t a God I could have much respect for. But when the Holy Ghost show us God as He is, we admire Him to the point of wonder and delight. (Gems from Tozer)

  • How domesticated is the God we worship?
  • Do we confine  him within our evangelical boxes?
  • Do we ask him to color within the lines we create for him?
  • Are our expectations of him limited by a narrow theology?

Or is he allowed to surprise and astonish us?

“Is he-quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion”…”Safe?” said Mr Beaver …”Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.””
Who would want a safe god!?

Yes I believe you are right..I fear we have put God in a box..we really ought to let the lion out of our cage and give him the freedom to roam as he pleases.

Lately I’ve been troubled by the old cliché, “The Holy Ghost is a perfect gentleman.” I believe it has a British origin, which makes its interpretation a little clearer, and perhaps more ominous.

What that meant is that he never barges in, never does anything you don’t want done, never makes a fuss in a Christian meeting, and that “decently and in order” is the favorite verse he inspired.

I don’t see this gentle-manliness in the Bible, and certainly not in my life. The best way to describe my conversion is the Spirit “seized” me and took me where he wanted me to go.
